The Economist Praises Harper

May 9, 2010 2 comments

In one editorial and one article today, the noted magazine The Economist has praised Canada’s stance against a global bank tax, as well as the handling of the Canadian economy by PM Stephen Harper. It praised the short duration of the recession (“Canada is nine months into recovery from its mildest and shortest downturn in recent history.”), as well as Harper’s stout opposition to a global bank tax (“when Americans and Europeans press Mr Harper at the G20 meeting to accept a tax on banks to curb their riskiness, he has reason to retort that Canadian-style regulation does the job better”). The articles in The Economist can be read, for free, here and here. The article has also managed to earn a nod from The Globe and Mail, which has had no choice but to praise Harper’s economic record in recent months.

In a turnaround from their previous criticism of Harper’s prorogation of Parliament, the magazine has also praised his ability to “govern for four years without a parliamentary majority.”
